Design and Architecture Norway

Ever since he was a child, Christoffer Aadalen has been interested in systems and how things are put together. This passion is clear in his competition entry to become one of the select young talents of the year. He has created a clever storage system with shelves and pegs that can be positioned freely on a panel, which is then mounted on the wall.

He calls the system ‘Plakativ’ and it is the result of his Bachelor’s project for the Graphic Design and Illustration programme at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

“I began by studying grid systems, which form the foundation for how text and images are positioned, such as in a book. I didn’t know where this project would take me, but I set myself the goal of creating something that was physical and useful,” explains Christoffer.

The shelf system is not only useful, but also extremely user-friendly. The panels can easily be mounted on a wall using a profiled frame, removed again and relocated, as well as rotated to no fewer than 12 different angles. Each panel is 45 cm wide, but the user can choose the height of the panels and how many are placed alongside one another. The modules are available in a wide range of shapes and colours and can be moved and mounted in different ways. The flexible layout and colour choice, combined with the items we place on the shelves and hang from the pegs, make every Plakativ personal and unique.

The fact that the system gives people the possibility to create something personal is not just a fun feature. It is based on a deliberate strategy to make the product more sustainable.

“I wanted to actively integrate the user in the design process because this creates a sense of belonging and reduces the possibility of the system being replaced,” adds Christoffer.

According to the jury, Plakativ meets the seven principles for universal design. The system has numerous layout and design options. It’s simple, intuitive and flexible, with a playful design language that achieves the perfect balance between the childlike and the sophisticated.
