To create a new generation of parking meters, NorTronic wanted to develop a new front panel. This panel needed to be innovative and user-friendly in order to guarantee the best possible service and processing. The idea was that modern monitors make it easier to communicate and visualise information. By switching to monitor-based meters, greater flexible could be created by making it possible to update the information within a 24-hour period if parking conditions change.

Challenge

In developing the front panel, the challenge was to determine whether NorTronics’ desire to use monitors on the parking meters would in fact result in a better user experience. This made it necessary to ensure that an integral, monitor-based solution would lead to a good user experience for all customers.

NorTronic utilised user observations to design the parking meters in order to determine user needs.

Process

NorTronic worked together with Inventas in designing a new and innovative solution. This work entailed observations, interviews and workshops aimed at gaining relevant insight into how the meters are used and how to improve the experience. The results were used to develop a solution proposal that was tailored to various user groups, regardless of the point of departure.

Result

The project provided NorTronic with a better understanding of the possibilities to create a new monitor for parking meters. The design methodology resulted in detailed knowledge of the usage pattern associated with the parking process.

Insight from the DIP project was used to initiate closer collaboration with the supplier of payment solutions. The key aspects of the project were developed further and the result is expected to be available in the market in 2016.
