Over the past ten years, the field of design has undergone extensive changes, both in Northern Europe and internationally. Design is not only a creative process for developing products and services, but also includes design thinking, service design and the strategic use of design, often combined with expertise from other disciplines. This expansion of the field of design creates design value in even more areas in both the business community and society.

Updated knowledge needed

What we are still lacking is an up-to-date overview of the design industry in the Nordic countries, making it difficult for buyers of design services to find relevant resources for their needs. It is also important for other interested parties that interact with the design industry, such as the policy implementation system, policymakers, industry organisations and educational institutions, to explain how the resources offered meet market demands.

Nordic collaboration

That is why the Dansk Design Center, Design Forum Finland, SVID – Stiftelsen Svensk Industridesign, Iceland Design Centre and DOGA are now working together to identify design resources in the entire Nordic region. The goal is to create an overview of providers of relevant design services in all countries and to develop a tool to make this information easily available. The project is being funded by Nordic Innovation and will be launched in September.

We look forward to gaining more knowledge about the types of design services available today. There is reason to believe that developments and demand in recent years have had an effect on how the services are offered and who provides them, says Anita Cecilie Drabløs, who is working on the project on behalf of DOGA.

Identifying design value

This autumn, DOGA is also conducting a market study to determine how the Norwegian business community uses design services and the value this adds to the company.

Together these two studies will contribute insight into both the supply and demand of design services in Norway.
