The course is a hands-on experience aimed at any professional working in environments that require presenting information in effective ways in order to capture the imagination of an audience. Participants will be introduced to the bright world of information design and data visualisation where the intersection of text and image, perception and cognition, beauty and function, logic and emotions, enables us to reveal what hides behind the data and to address effective messages.
Through lectures, case studies, discussions and hands-on tasks, participants will gain knowledge about the co-design process in data visualisation, about the tools behind effective visualisations and about challenges and opportunities.

There will be a focus on:
- how a participatory and iterative approach can contribute to build a deep understanding of the nature of the data as well as the assumptions, caveats, connections and challenges
- how to gather and organize data
- how to identify the messages that need to be communicated in relation to an audience
- how to transform the data into powerful stories
- how to choose the most appropriate tools in order to present those stories.
Participants will leave inspired and equipped with the tools to co-create engaging and data-rich visualisations that empower audiences to see patterns, think systematically and make informed decisions about the biggest challenges we face together as a society.
The Information Visualisation course has been an inspiring journey into the amazing world of visual storytelling.
About the schedule and the material you need to bring
Expect to experience a diverse, friendly, dynamic, engaging and funny learning environment. Course is held in English, no prior design knowledge is required to attend the course.
The course start at 10:00 and ends at 16:00. Participants are invited to arrive 15 minutes before the start. Coffee and refreshments throughout the day and a delicious lunch prepared by the Funky-Fresh-Food chefs will be served between 12:30 and 13:30 and included in the cost.
A lot of material will be provided and ready for you but please bring: your laptop for research purposes, your note-book, some colour pencils or coloured felt tips, a ruler, a rubber, scissors, glue (pritt stick).
The course is held in English.
This course got me thinking about the poetry in data, and that is a valuable way to be innovative in presenting facts.
InfoDesignLab is a socially-conscious information design firm that helps companies and organizations turn complex knowledge into meaningful narratives, unique visualisations and understandable messages.
AngelaMorelli is an award-winning information designer based in Norway. She is the co-founder and CEO of InfoDesignLab. After a degree in Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and an MA in Industrial Design, she gained her MA in Information Design from Central St Martins in London and a Postgraduate Certificate for teaching in Higher Education.
She is an acclaimed international speaker, an Associate Lecturer at Central St Martins in London and a visiting lecturer in universities in Europe. She has been collaborating with research organisations for the past 15 years, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Water Footprint Network, the European Environment Agency and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
Angela firmly believes that information design can play an extraordinary role in democratising knowledge, explaining complexity and facilitating understanding. She has been jury member of the International Institute of Information Design Award, and along with philanthropist Paul Polak, ethologist Jane Goodall, water scientist Tony Allan and other individuals committed to defend planetary ecosystems, she has been awarded Il Monito del Giardino Award in 2013. Angela was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
Tom G. Johansen
Tom G. Johansen is an award-winning information designer. He is the co-founder of InfoDesignLab. He has over 20 years of practice in design, ranging from strategic design to board game design, from interaction design to information visualization.
He has worked as a special advisor in visualizing data for Statistics Norway and he has been a member of Eurostat’s Visualization Task Force. For seven years he has worked at The Norwegian National Broadcaster (NRK) embedding design and information visualization as an integrated part of the news-floor operation.
While at NRK his work has received, among other awards, the World Media Award. He has a solid experience in how visualisations can be used as effective tool for policy makers around the world and has worked on several IPCC reports, contributing to high-level political and scientific negotiations in climate change science.
Tom is an advocate for the value of cross collaboration among different professions and works closely with journalists, researchers, scientists and activists. He is an acclaimed international speaker and teaches at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Norwegian Institute of Journalism and at Central St Martins University in London.
