? +Munch = true

The exhibition series +Munch was a very ambitious venture undertaken by the Munch Museum in which six so-called “dialogue exhibitions” were to present Munch alongside artists such as Bjarne Melgaard, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Vigeland, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jasper Johns, and Asger Jorn. The project was shown at the Munch Museum in the period 2015-2017.

Panel remarks

There’s a saying that goes "You can’t argue with success", and that’s very much the case with the Munch Museum’s initiative to connect Edvard Munch with various artists. Public interest exploded and made those of us who love art optimistic about the Munch Museum's future in Bjørvika. This is also a great example of how good design adds value, not only in an aesthetic sense but also monetarily.

The solution is characterised by what we would call creative courage and determination, with some radical stylistic approaches in the premises and to the content and themes of the actual exhibitions. They have worked coherently here to make the exhibitions attractions in their own right, and it is a strong testament to what can be achieved when architects, designers, and art curators work across disciplines with mutual respect.

The graphic profile connects artists as disparate as Van Gogh and Bjarne Melgaard into a common expression, while at the same time each artist gets their own typography. A very strong project, pure and simple.
